Song Choices Explained
- The first song Just A Dream by Nelly is about an individual's dreams where he wishes that he and his lover were together and have a bright future but the individual realizes that it was just a broken dream. Walter Lee Younger has a dream to be a successful businessman and provide for his family but his dreams are crushed when he finds out that Willy left with the money.
- In the second song Let Her Go by Passenger, the "her" represents dreams that weren't achievable and now the signer must learn to let the dream go. In the Raisin In The Sun there were many dreams that the characters learned to let go such as: Mama's dreams about buying a house in Morgan Park and living there happily with her husband, and Walter Lee's dreams about being a successful entrepreneur and providing for his family.
- The third song Maps by Maroon 5 talks about a man who wonders where his lover was when he was at his worst moment and down on his knees as illustrated in the lines "But I wonder where were you? When I was at my worst Down on my knees". Walter Lee feels the same way because his wife doesn't support his dream and tries to push reality back into him.
- The fourth song Billionaire by Bruno Mars and Travis McCoy talks about an individual who wishes to be a millionaire and has plans to spend the money as illustrated in these lines, "I wanna be a billionaire so freaking bad" and "Give a few Mercedes like here lady have this". Walter Lee wants to be rich by being a successful entrepreneur and spend money in unnecessary wants just because he is rich.
- The fifth song No Church in the Wild by Jay-Z and Kanye West talks about how you cannot rely on god to help you achieve your dreams and in the book Benethea talks about "Why should they thanks god for everything?" and that "God doesn't pay the bills".
